How the PAYE is worked out
Each slice of the salary is taxed at its own rate, and only the part inside a band pays that band's rate. The bands this salary reaches are shaded.
| Monthly band | Rate | Taxed in this band | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| US$0.00 to US$100.00 | 0% | US$100.00 | US$0.00 |
| US$100.00 to US$300.00 | 20% | US$200.00 | US$40.00 |
| US$300.00 to US$1,000.00 | 25% | US$500.00 | US$125.00 |

The other two deductionsThe AIDS levy and NSSA, on top of the PAYE.
3%AIDS levy, of the PAYE4.5%NSSA, of the salaryUS$31.50most NSSA takes a month
The AIDS levy is 3% of the PAYE, not of the salary. NSSA takes 4.5% of the salary, but only on the first US$700.00 a month, so it never passes US$31.50.
What this leaves outYour real take-home can be higher, never lower.
- Tax credits for the elderly, the blind and medical costs. Your real take-home can be higher, never lower.
- The NSSA cap on ZiG salaries, which moves with the exchange rate. The ZiG figure takes 4.5% with no cap.
- Pension, medical aid and union deductions your employer makes.
A quicker way to work it out
Multiply the whole salary by the band's rate, then take off a fixed amount. It gives the same answer. For example, US$1,800.00 × 30% less US$85.00 is US$455.00.
